Band at Fairmount Park
For practical purposes at Fairmount Park, students who play in the “band” play the following instruments: *flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, baritone/euphonium, percussion. (Students who play in the orchestra play the following instruments: violin, viola, cello).
All beginners who play flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone/baritone, percussion have one 30 or 40 minute lesson during the school day. This is a “pull out program” where students come to the music room with Mr. Pendergrass and other students playing the same instrument once a week. This is by no means enough time for students to advance, so a commitment to practice at home is key as well as strong parental support. Mr. Pendergrass will provide your family with information and resources to help you succeed.
All 2nd year players or predominantly 5th grade students, will meet once a week as an ensemble or Intermediate Band (flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, baritone/euphonium and percussion students) for a combined rehearsal with Mr. Pendergrass.
*(While it’s true that many of the instruments in the band do indeed play in an orchestra in the real world, or more technically a symphonic orchestra, AND in reality, we should be using the term “string orchestra” for our violin, viola and cello students, we are sticking with BAND and ORCHESTRA…)
